Encouraging group activities for people with mental health issues
Many of the individuals we support are quite independent and have varying interests. As a result, there are several activities that take place within the service to encourage individuals to get involved in group activities. These include:
- Walking group
- Coffee and chat evenings
- Themed cooking nights
- Movie nights
Service users regularly plan day trips, which have included visits to The Gordon Highlanders Museum, football matches at Pittodrie, walks round Duthie Park, cinema visits and attending church groups. Our service has links with several outside agencies and service users often attend Inchgarth Community Centre, where they can access pool tables and a fitness suite.
Some service users attend an arts and crafts group, walking group and allotment visits provided by Reach Out. Our local occupational therapy service also provides ‘healthy minds’ sessions within the service which looks at lifestyles and healthy eating. Some service users have also taken advantage of volunteering opportunities both within and outwith VSA.
