VSA Aberdeen Carers Service

Airyhall Carers Respite Service

Airyhall Carers Respite Centre provides a safe haven for some of the most vulnerable people while allowing those with a caring responsibility some invaluable respite time.

The centre supports people living with a mental or physical illness who are cared for in their own home; provides stability, routine and an opportunity to socially interact with others while providing the benefit of a few hours of respite for their carer/loved one(s).

We support individuals, over the age of 50, with a mental or physical illness; we deliver a wide range of activities that are designed, and tailored, to deliver outcomes relating to an individual's personal care plan.

Activities include:

  • Reminiscence
  • Life stories
  • Music to movement/music therapy
  • Mindfulness sessions
  • Snooker/pool
  • Quizzes
  • Dominoes
  • Group games
  • Board games
  • Pampering
  • Baking groups
  • Crafts
  • Singing and dancing

This service allows unpaid carers access to support for their loved one(s) while enabling them to take time out to look after themselves for a few hours.

This service is critical to people in an unpaid caring role and enables them to maintain caring for their loved one(s) at home without reaching crisis point which would mean intervention from the NHS and social care.

People benefited from this service 2019 / 2020

"Walking through the door at Airyhall day centre is a breath of fresh air and you are immediately uplifted and welcomed with smiling faces, fun and laughter to greet you, not to mention the time and care given to my husband during the time he is at the centre. Above and beyond that I’m always asked how I am, which is something that doesn’t happen often as people are more focussed on the ill person and often the carer is forgotten, so it’s nice to be noticed."
