VSA nominated for Excellence in Mental Health Services Award

VSA, the North-east’s leading social care charity, Westerton Crescent service has been nominated for a Scottish Social Services Award (SSSA) for Excellence in Mental Health Services. The awards celebrate the work of Scottish Social Services and the individuals, teams, and organisations making a positive difference to people’s lives.

Each year the SSSA choose a special policy focus in the sector, and this year the award recognises the importance of mental health services across our society and the importance of good mental health for all.

Brendan McCabe, VSA’s Head of Quality and Improvement Compliance Unit, said: “At VSA’s Westerton Crescent service, we provide support in a collaborative way between staff and tenants to help reach their goals."

The team at Westerton have continually gone over and above to help their tenants achieve their goals, and champion the rights of people with mental health illnesses in the local community.

Brendan said, “We want our tenants to live as independent a life as possible, and the community around Westerton have been incredible in helping us achieve this. While there is still undoubtedly stigma around mental health, the staff listen and advocate for the tenants. We’ve even had local MPs come to spend time with us to further spread our message that people with mental health illnesses have the same rights as anyone else.”

The award ceremony takes place on Wednesday 5th June at  Mansfield Traquair in Edinburgh where VSA will be up against two other services in this category. Jen Ewen, VSA’s Director of Adult Services, said: “We are delighted to be nominated for this prestigious award, and we believe that the team at Westerton thoroughly deserve this recognition. They continually provide outstanding support to our tenants in helping them lead an independent, positive, and fulfilling life.”

VSA’s Westerton Crescent is purpose-built to provide accommodation for nine adults with a history of severe and enduring mental health problems, which promotes self-esteem and independence.

VSA delivers a range of social care services to people of all ages across the North-East of Scotland. VSA provides the best care and support to enable our community to fulfill its potential. You can find out more about VSA, and play your part to help change lives by visiting: www.vsa.org.uk
