VSA's Linn Moor School Praised in Inspection Report

Linn Moor School provides education and care for children and young people, aged 5 to 18 years, with additional support needs arising primarily from autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). Although the school is not an autistic specific provision, its skill in supporting young people with ASD is recognised by HMIE and the Care Commission who reported that 'autism support techniques are having a positive impact on young people's communication and behaviour by reducing their anxieties and increasing their ability to work independently'.

Inspectors reported that 'the high quality teaching, well established routines and very good interaction between staff and young people help children and young people to learn in a caring environment'. They recommend that 'the school should ensure regular opportunities for teachers to meet to reflect on the range and quality of experiences for learners, the impact of these and the outcomes they achieve' as area for improvement.

Karen Gebbie-Smith, Joint Head of School (Education) is delighted with the positive praise the school has earned, and said,"It is important that our students have the very best of care, support and education and I am thrilled that this report celebrates the work of the school. Students, staff, parents, partner agencies and the community should be commended for their hard work in making Linn Moor a special place.".

The inspectors reported many key strengths:

  • Staff commitment to promoting positive relationships, trust, dignity, respect and empowerment of young people.
  • Motivating learning experiences designed to encourage independence and choice and develop personal and social skills.
  • Partnerships with parents, the local community and other agencies.
  • High quality staff training, leading to appropriate support in developing young people's communication and practical skills.
  • Vision and commitment of managers and staff to integrated working practices across care and education.
  • Sharon Napier Joint Head of School (Care) said, "I am pleased that the report recognises the impact that the range of specialist resources and training opportunities, which VSA has supported the school to invest in, makes to our complex youngsters. It is our ability to offer a specialist service that enables our children and young people to achieve as life long learners."

Kenneth Simpson, Chief Executive of VSA said, "I am really delighted with this very positive report, and pleased that the inspectors recognise the hard work and very high skill level of our staff team at Linn Moor School. We are constantly striving to improve the services we offer, to provide the highest standards of care and education to our students.".

The Joint Heads of Linn Moor have found the process very helpful and have already begun working to implement an action plan to address improvements in the light of inspection findings. HMIE and the Care Commission will make no further visits in connection with this inspection.
