Scottish Executive Recognise Young Volunteers at Awards Ceremony

22 June 2007

Young Volunteers in Aberdeen have been rewarded for their contribution to organisations and community projects in the city. Over 13,000 volunteering hours have been contributed by young people in Aberdeen who have achieved the MV Award for volunteering in the community.

To celebrate the achievements of young volunteers and the MV Award over the last year' an event was held at The Tunnels last week. Young volunteers from a range of organisations were recognised for achieving the 50, 100 and 200 hour awards, which were presented on the night by Cammy Campbell from Northsound. Goody bags and their contents were contributed to from a range of organisations including Dialogue Youth and live music was later provided by Right Hand Left and Eskimo Blonde.

Catriona Hogg, Youth Development Worker at Aberdeen Volunteer Centre said "These awards, which are endorsed by the Scottish Executive, are a great way to recognise the contribution of young volunteers aged 16 to 25. Young people throughout Aberdeen are involved in donating their time to a great variety of projects and benefiting themselves with the skills and experience they're gaining".

Josh McKay who has volunteered with several organisations in Aberdeen said "As a volunteer with organisations like the Youth Action Committee, Mastrick Young People's Project and the British Heart Foundation, my experiences have been new and exciting. Personal benefits of my volunteering are that I get to meet new people, learn new skills, and increase self-esteem and confidence. You can also get training through volunteering which increases your employability and qualifications which can help when applying for college, university, or a job. But most of all, its fun!

Volunteering isn't and shouldn't be a hard chore which you have to endure, but something which you can enjoy as well. Volunteering may seem like a big step and may seem quite daunting to some people but one of the good things about being a volunteer is you have a team of people behind you who will help you with your work and you are never alone in the work you have to do. So if your thinking about volunteering, go for it, I promise you, you won't look back!"
