VSA Easter Anguston Holland Study Trip

28 May 2007

On Tuesday 29th May, a group of trainees from VSA's Easter Anguston Farm near Peterculter are taking off to Holland on an exciting three day study tour. The 13 trainees and 4 members of staff, including the Farm Manager George Philip, will be leaving from the Farm at 8.30am on Tuesday to catch their flight to Amsterdam at 10.55 am, and will arrive back at Aberdeen Airport at 9.30pm on Thursday 31st May.

After they arrive in Holland, the group will visit a Care Farm and will be able to compare its similarities - and differences - to Easter Anguston.  On Wednesday they plan to pay a visit to Holland's biggest flower auction at Aalsmeer, followed by a guided tour of a large rose producing nursery, both of which will be of great interest as a major part of Easter Anguston's work is horticultural. Farming will also be covered by a trip to an experimental farm near Leystad.

On Thursday, after a final visit to a nursery producing bedding plants, the group will take some time out for a boat tour on the canals before heading back to the airport for their evening flight home.

The Easter Anguston trainees and staff have been fundraising for the trip for some time, and have received great support from energy company Total E&P UK PLC and a local group of vintage tractor enthusiasts, the Friends of Fergie Heritage, who raised funds at a Fergie Open Day held at the farm last September.

George Philip, Farm Manager, said "Many of our trainees have never been abroad so the trip will be a great experience for them, helping them to gain self-confidence and independence. Although we'll no doubt have some fun along the way, they all know that this is a not a holiday but a study trip from which we hope to benefit by gathering different ideas in farming and horticulture to put into practice when we come home."
