Lionel Blair Opens the Broomhill Activity Centre

TV personality Lionel Blair carried out the official opening of the new Broomhill Activity Centre last October.

Open to people over the age of 55, the centre has played an important role in the life of Aberdeen’s older citizens for more than 65 years.

The new Broomhill Activity Centre is part of VSA’s new Broomhill Park complex, at the junction of Broomhill Road and South Anderson Drive.

Lionel Blair, who took a break from the Strictly Ballroom Dancing West End musical at His Majesty’s Theatre, to carry out the opening, paid tribute to the fund-raising efforts that have made the new centre possible.

"I feel privileged to have been invited to carry out the official opening of this much needed and long awaited facility. I know from my own charity involvement that Voluntary Service Aberdeen is a great and long-standing local charity, which has achieved superb results for ageing members of the Aberdeen community.

"I think it’s great that an initiative like this encourages older people to be active, get out and about and be a part of a wider social group. This is especially important for those who live alone."

There is a danger, in later years, that older people become socially isolated and feel that they are no longer valued as part of the community. The Broomhill Activity Centre will cater for up to 400 members and provide them with a range of activities that will keep its members physically and mentally active and enable them to contribute to the community.

Importantly, although managed by VSA, the centre is run by its members. That gives them a key role, a real involvement in the community and an important sense of purpose. Activities at the centre will range from dancing, drama and concerts to learning facilities for computing and foreign languages that will all promote a fulfilling community life.
