Broomhill Park Opened by Sir Alex Ferguson
![]() Manchester United Football Club Manager and Patron of the Broomhill Park Appeal, Sir Alex Ferguson, came to Aberdeen to perform the official opening of the Broomhill Park development on Thursday 24 November 2005. Sir Alex Ferguson, who has a strong affinity with Aberdeen due to his career with Aberdeen Football Club, was appointed Patron of Broomhill Park three years ago. Taking time out of his demanding schedule, Sir Alex carried out the official opening of the ‘Housing with Support and Care’ Unit and said: "I am honoured to be a part of such a fantastic development. At one point or another we all reach an age where we may need a little help and the Broomhill Park development is superb as it gives older people the flexibility in care that allows them to retain a strong sense of independence, while being a part of the wider community." Kenneth Simpson, Chief Executive of Voluntary Service Aberdeen commented on the importance of this new and innovative housing development: "It is great to finally open the doors to a long awaited and entirely new Broomhill Park. The ‘Housing with Support and Care’ unit - the second phase in the Broomhill development - which officially opened today, allows tenants to live independently in self contained flats where they have the choice to live privately with their own personal facilities, have access to communal facilities or have service provided provisions. These flexible levels of care can be tailored to each individual’s needs." Voluntary Service Aberdeen launched the fundraising Appeal to help build Broomhill Park in May 2002 with a target of £2 million. Only this week has that target been reached and Fiona Kennedy, Chairman of the Broomhill Park Appeal expressed her thanks to all those who have made the ‘Housing with Support and Care’ Unit possible. The new Broomhill Park ‘Housing with Support and Care’ Unit is situated at the junction of Broomhill Road and South Anderson Drive where the former Broomhill Park home was situated.
