Special Award for Aberdeen's Longest Serving Volunteer
![]() Aberdeen Volunteer Co-ordinators’ Forum has presented a ‘longest serving volunteer’ award to Mrs Gladys Thompson for almost 45 years volunteering. In that time it is estimated that Mrs Thompson has contributed over 65,000 hours volunteering. Mrs Thompson was the longest serving volunteer of the 72 organisations which make up the Forum. Mike Melvin, Forum Chairperson, said, “Forum members were amazed and impressed by Mrs Thompson’s commitment to volunteering.“ Ninety years old last November, Mrs Thompson has spent all of her 45 years as a volunteer with VSA’s charity shops. For many years she played a major part in the management of all of VSA’s shops, and now manages the Castle Street shop, still volunteering around 20 hours each week. Kenneth Simpson, Chief Executive of VSA, said, “VSA marked Mrs Thompson’s long service at our AGM last October and we are all delighted that she is receiving this additional award from the Aberdeen Volunteer Co-ordinators’ Forum. Mrs Thompson’s commitment has been outstanding, and her sheer energy and amazing spirit have kept us all on our toes! She has been instrumental in helping to raise an estimated £2million in our shops which has been used towards funding VSA’s caring work in the community. We also pay tribute to the great team of volunteers she built up, many of whom also have service measured in decades.“ Mrs Thompson said, “The VSA shops and the friendships I‘ve made with other volunteers have played an important part in my life. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the years I’ve spent helping to build up the shops, which are a great support to families on low incomes in Aberdeen.“ For more information please contact Mike Melvin, at VSA’s Aberdeen Volunteer Centre on 01224 212021 or email volunteer.centre@vsa.org.uk.
