Aberdeen Children's Society - Counselling advice for young people
VSA’s contribution to the growth of counselling services in Aberdeen continues and we are currently taking a lead role in the shaping and promotion of a city-wide strategy for the development of counselling services for children and young people. Our Counsellor for Looked After Children - a service started in 2004 for a trial period - has just been made permanent due to its success in providing confidential counselling to children who are ‘looked after’ in children’s homes or foster care in the city.
Known as ‘Free Talk’, the service has supported 58 young people presenting with a number of problems, including anger, depression, loneliness, feelings of rejection, substance misuse, behavioural difficulties and low self-esteem. Many refer themselves, while others are referred through a number of statutory sources, especially social work departments.
Our successful Student Counselling Service at St Machar Academy - Room to Talk - will be resuming from August 2006 with a temporary counsellor
