Carers Centre History
Centre History
The Carers Centre was officially opened in 1994 with funding from the Princess Royal Trust for Carers, BT Scotland, Grampian Regional Council (now Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire Councils) and Grampian Health Board (now NHS Grampian), and managed by VSA (formerly Voluntary Service Aberdeen). It was the first Princess Royal Trust for Carers Centre in Scotland. When we opened, we used earlier research on carers' needs to decide on the services we would provide. We had three staff members and a few volunteers, all based in the Centre. The focus was on information, advice and support, which remains the core of our work today. We now have 10 staff based in the Centre and 10 staff working in outreach projects. The centre also has 6 sessional workers and several volunteers.
The centre has become a focal point for carer-based issues and interest groups. Carers, professionals, students and the general public use the centre for a variety of purposes e.g. base for groups, meeting place and information source. The centre is also the base for the reference library and production of information such as the Carers Resource Book, Carers News, Information Packs and Emergency Cards.
